Terms and conditions of entry

To help keep young people safe and ensure a positive experience for everyone, Zoos Victoria’s terms and conditions of entry apply. Please keep the following guidelines in mind during your visit:

  • Children and students remain the responsibility of their supervising adult at all times, including during workshops, while exploring the zoo and when using the Safari Bus.
  • As your group explores the zoo, please respect the comfort and wellbeing of animals and other visitors.
  • Loud noises and sudden movements can be distressing for animals. For this reason, ball games and whistles are not permitted.
  • At Healesville Sanctuary and Kyabram Fauna Park shops, up to six students may enter at a time with a supervising adult. Please leave student bags outside.
  • Zoo staff have emergency management systems in place to support missing students, first aid and medical emergencies.

Animal experiences

Zoos Victoria animal experiences discuss and observe animals and interpret their behaviours. We prioritise animal welfare and wellbeing and we do not touch animals. When we develop experiences for visitors, our animals have the choice to participate or not, which supports positive animal welfare outcomes.

Find out more at Zoos Victoria's Guiding Principles for Animal Experiences.

Other FAQs

Does it cost extra to do a Zoo Teacher workshop?

No - your zoo admission includes a free workshop and if you're booked into any program except a 'self-guided excursion', we will also book your workshop/s for you.

Can I book more than one program/workshop for my group?

We recommend that you book only one program/workshop for your group so that you've also got enough time to explore the zoo.

What is a self-guided excursion?

In a self-guided excursion, you and your students can choose your own adventure and explore the zoo independently. Self-guided excursions do not include a Zoo Teacher workshop.

Do I need to read the teaching guide?

Yes - your free teaching guide includes what you need to do to prepare for your zoo excursion. It also includes suggested activities for your classroom and at the zoo.

Do I need to print out the student workbook?

Your program’s teaching guide will let you know if you need to bring printed copies of the student workbook for use during your excursion.

What if my group numbers change?

No problem. If your group number is only changing by a few, it's okay to let us know on the day. If your group number has changed significantly, please email or call our Customer Engagement team and they'll adjust your booking for you. This will help us ensure you have a great day at the zoo.

Can I bring other adult helpers?

Yes - other adult helpers are most welcome.

Teachers and adult helpers are admitted free-of-charge within the program’s recommended adult-student ratio.

Additional adult helpers will be charged a reduced adult concession rate of $40 ($24 at Kyabram Fauna Park) or they are welcome to use their Zoos Victoria Adult Membership for free entry.

What if it's raining?

Your excursion will take place outdoors so your group will need to dress for the weather. If extreme weather is predicted, you are welcome to reschedule your zoo visit.

What if we're running late?

We understand that these things happen. Please call our Customer Engagement team on 1300 960 784 and let us know your estimated arrival time.

If you are late for your zoo workshop, it is likely that it will be cancelled. You've still got the rest of the day to enjoy independent exploration of the zoo.

Do adults need to stay with students during their zoo workshop?

Children and students remain the responsibility of supervising adults at all times, including during any zoo workshops.

Do we have to stick to the itinerary?

There is a lot to see at the zoo and you may not be able to explore it all in one day.

Itineraries are provided to help you plan your day, arrive at your workshop on time and board the Safari Bus at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Times for these can't be changed so we recommend sticking to the itinerary you've been given.

If you need more support with planning your independent exploration of the zoo, we recommend you aim to walk two trails and attend at least one Keeper Talk, with breaks in between.

Do I need to book to attend a Keeper Talk?

No - Keeper Talks are available for all zoo visitors and there's no need to book. Some Talks have limited capacity so we recommend getting there a few minutes early to find a good spot. Your zoo map lists all the times.

Is there somewhere to leave our bags?

If you are visiting Kyabram Fauna Park, there is a room available to store bags for the day. If you're visiting another zoo, limited lockers are available and we recommend your group plans to carry your bags while you explore the zoo.

Is there somewhere to leave our lunches (e.g. a pavilion)?

For flexibility, we recommend students carry a rubbish-free lunch in their backpack.

You are welcome to leave your lunches in an available zoo pavilion and no booking is required. These spaces are not secure so we recommend you:

  • don't leave any valuables
  • place food in secure tubs, away from birds

Your map will include where to stop for snacks and lunch as you explore the zoo.

Can my group buy their lunch at the zoo?

Yes - everyone is welcome to buy food and drink at the zoo.

Our zoos are cashless so payment is made by credit or debit card.

Where do we need to meet for our program?
  • You will receive an email before your visit with property-specific arrival instructions, including parking information and where to meet.
Can do my own safety evaluation before our excursion?

Yes - you are most welcome to visit the zoo and do your own evaluation before your visit. You will get free entry if you show your school booking information at the gate.

Zoos Victoria Risk Assessments are also available.

Should I bring a First Aid bag?

Yes - we encourage you to have your first aid kit with you at all times. If you need additional help, ask a zoo staff member or volunteer to contact one of our First Aid Officers and they'll come to you.

Can we bring our containers to the zoo for recycling as part of the Container Deposit Scheme?

Yes - the zoo is a collection point for the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). You are welcome to bring eligible drink containers to recycle.

As part of the Don’t Kiss This Frog program, every container supports conservation projects such as saving endangered frogs.

Eligible containers purchased at the zoo can also be recycled on-site.
